The Bank of Canada kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 0.5 % in a rate decision today in which policy makers continued to highlight economic slack and divergence with the U.S. economy. Subdued wage growth in wages and hours worked continue to reflect persistent economic slack in Canada, in contrast to the United States. While specific reference to U.S. policies were removed from the last statement, the BoC today reiterated that it remains attentive to the impact of significance uncertainties weighing on the outlook. On the positive side, the Bank highlighted an improving outlook growth for the Canadian and global economies, while pointing out the development were expected and that exports continue to face competitiveness challenges. President Donald Trump's first address to congress yesterday struck a conciliatory tone, urging Americans to set aside conflict. The speech, however, was short on policy details that some investors were hoping for, with the president opting for broad promises -"I am going to bring bank millions of jobs"- rather than specifics. While U.S. stock futures pared their gains slightly while Trump was on his feet, markets were generally unmoved by the rhetoric. Currently, the TSX is up 0.84% and the DOW is up 1.17%. EURCAD is up 0.19% trading between 1.4007 and 1.4099. GBPCAD is down 0.12% trading between 1.6356 and 1.6512. JPYCAD is down 0.61% trading between 0.01167 and 0.01179.
