European stocks fell for a third consecutive day on Tuesday, once again dragged down by financials as shares in Deutsche Bank slid on deepening concern about its health after its $8.5-billion cash call.
A batch of weak corporate earnings reports and the biggest fall in German industrial orders since the depths of the global financial crisis also disappointed investors, setting the tone for a lacklustre session in Europe.
In currencies, the US dollar inched higher against a basket of trade-weighted peers. The dollar index rose 0.1 per cent to 101.73, mirroring Monday's slender gain. A rate hike from the Federal Reserve next week is virtually fully priced into financial markets, so the dollar and U.S. bond yields might be vulnerable to a correction lower. But investors saw enough room to push the greenback and yields higher on Tuesday, lifting the 10-year yield for the fifth day in a row back above 2.50 per cent and the two-year yield up a basis point to 1.32 per cent. Currently, the TSX is down 0.24% while the DOW is down 0.15%. EURCAD is up 0.05% trading between 1.4158 and 1.4203. GBPCAD is down 0.12% trading between 1.6334 and 1.6414. JPYCAD is up 0.22% trading between 0.01175 and 0.01177. Gold is down 0.52% trading between $1,216 and $1,227USD/oz., silver is down 0.79% trading between $17.49 and $17.78USD/oz., while oil is up 0.55% trading between $53.05 and $53.77.
