European stocks struggled for direction while futures for the S&P 500 advanced in a lackluster session overshadowed by the U.S. holiday. There was a more downbeat mood in Asia where shares slipped even as the yuan extended a rebound. Telecom companies were the biggest winners on the Stoxx Europe 600 Index, though declines in technology shares helped offset the move. Trading volumes were more than 35 percent below the 30-day average. Asian shares notched further losses even as China's currency rose for a second day, though it pared some gains after a Reuters report that the central bank is comfortable with a weaker yuan. The yen nudged higher and the euro slipped, while the pound rose on data showing the U.K.'s services sector grew at the fastest pace in eight months in June. With U.S. markets shuttered for Independence Day, the focus is shifting to a busy end to the week, when minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting and jobs numbers are due. Currently, the TSX is up 0.27% and the DOW is down 0.54%. EURCAD is down 0.10% trading between 1.5290 and 1.5334. GBPCAD is up 0.17% trading between 1.7323 and 1.7384. JPYCAD is down 0.58% trading between 0.01187 and 0.01190. Gold is up 0.08% trading between $1,254 and $1,261USD/oz., silver is up 0.10% trading between $15.99 and $16.14USD/oz., while oil is down 0.35% trading between $73.52 and $74.76.
