Stocks stumbled at the open of U.S. trading as a deadline approached for America and China to raise reciprocal tariffs. The yen climbed with Treasuries as investors sought havens, while the yuan fell to its weakest since January. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell for a fourth day. In Europe, automakers led a retreat for the Stoxx Europe 600, which followed Asian benchmarks down after President Donald Trump ratcheted up his hard-line rhetoric on trade. The MSCI Asia Pacific gauge dropped the most in six weeks. Treasury 10-year notes jumped, hours after Wednesday's auction saw the weakest demand for the benchmark bond in a decade. Currently, the TSX is down 0.28% and the DJIA is down 1.23%. EURCAD is up 0.51% trading between 1.5068 and 1.5169. GBPCAD is up 0.15% trading between 1.7486 and 1.7570. JPYCAD is up 0.76% trading between 0.01223 and 0.01231. Gold is up 0.12% trading between $1,279 and $1,286USD/oz, silver is down 0.10% trading between $14.70 and $14.86USD/oz, while oil (WTI crude) is down 1.50% trading between $61.27 and $62.18.
