U.S. stocks surged on hopes that President Donald Trump will de-escalate his trade war with China, adding to gains sparked by the ECB's signal it is ready to cut interest rates if warranted. Treasuries rose. The S&P 500 jumped within 1% of its all-time high after Trump tweeted that he will meet with China's Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit next week. Trade tensions have weighed on stocks since Trump escalated his trade war in early May. Stocks and bonds rallied around the world after Mario Draghi said the European Central Bank is ready with stimulus if needed, adding to expectations for easier monetary policies. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to strike a more dovish tone with its decision Wednesday. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 2.01% before the notes pared gains on the Trump tweet. German 10-year rates tumbled further below zero. Currently, the TSX is up 0.79% and the DJIA is up 1.18%. EURCAD is down 0.37% trading between 1.4994 and 1.5084. GBPCAD is down 0.17% trading between 1.6771 and 1.6832. JPYCAD is up 0.47% trading between 0.01234 and 0.01240. Gold is up 0.27% trading between $1,338 and $1,355USD/oz, silver is up 0.49% trading between $14.81 and $15.02USD/oz, while oil (WTI crude) is up 2.17% trading between $51.48 and $53.21.
